We now have some amazing technology at our fingertips so we might as well make the most of it if it can make life easier. And the best part? Lots of these apps are FREE! Yay, everyone likes a freebie.
So without further ado, here is a list of some of the best apps out there to help you stick to your HYH plan and get the results you want...
This is where most people tend to have issues, whether it's not realising how many calories they're consuming, having an all-or-nothing mindset which then leads to bingeing, or being so unorganised that they end up grabbing whatever they can and they healthy eating goes out the window.
All these apps work alongside daily/ weekly meal planning.
1. Daily Water
Most of us don't drink enough and know how good it is for us. But what to do about it? This app sends you reminders throughout the day, which you can then tick off and track your daily intake. Simple but genius.
2. My Fitness Pal
MFP logs food when you simply scan the label using your phone. Eating food that doesn't have labels? You can type it in instead. You can go as in-depth or as simple as you like with this one.
3. See How You Eat Food Diary
This has to be the easiest food log ever. Simply take a photo of each meal et voila. All stored in a beautifully designed package.
4. Clean and Green Eating
This is a lovely app full of really exciting recipes. You can search for inspiration, you can give it ingredients you've already got and it will find you something to make, the photos are mouth-wateringly beautiful and it's all pretty healthy stuff. PLUS unlike many recipe sites, this gives you a break down of the nutrition values too. Win.
Meal Planning: Why and How
So you have been given exercises to follow, how do you make them easier to follow?
A great app for when you need to do interval training. This could be used for running, bodyweight workouts or anything else which is not just a steady pace and requires having a stopwatch. You set up the intervals you want on this app, you can run it in the background whilst your music is playing on your phone, and a lovely lady tells you when to move on to the next section of the workout. Easy-peasy.
This app also runs in the background so you can hear your music. Very easy to use, just press 'start running' when you... start running (or walking etc), and it logs the distance you cover, the elevation, the times each mile took and gives you a lovely map of where you ran. You can get as involved with this app as you like- there are options to log all your runs and looks at graphs and stats, so that can be pretty good motivation too.
Much like RunKeeper, this is really popular with runners, roadies and mountain bikers. Again, tracks everything you'd want to know as above but also has a database with the times everyone else took to do your route or certain segments... So that can be a great source of motivation if you're the competitive type!
6 Running Tips For Newbies
Because we all need a little shove sometimes.
1. Pinterest and Instagram
Find thousands of wonderful recipes, quotes, pictures, workout ideas and more. I have boards on my Pinterest for workout clothes, recipes to try, quotes and tips, moves to try out etc.
What these apps are not for: following unrealistic airbrushed photos and beating yourself up.
2. Days Since
Not only does this give you days since a certain event (eg. starting your HYH plan) but also gives you a countdown with days until certain events. Great if you have a holiday, wedding or race coming up!
3. Camera and PicStitch
Often we can't see the changes happening to our body in the first few weeks. We look at ourselves each day and have no way to tell how we're improving. That's where PicStitch comes in. Take body photos on day one, then continue every three weeks and see the progress before your eyes. Stitch them together using the app and smile.
4 Mega Motivational Videos For Fitness
All the other jazz that doesn't fit into the above categories.
I love this app. SO. MUCH. MUSIC. You can search for all sorts of genres and moods and activities and find music to fit. Great for discovering new music, enjoying a blast from the past or using current favourites to boost your workouts.
2. Gratitude Journal
This is a seriously good looking gratitude app, where you can list daily gratitudes, put photos with them and it stores in in a calendar so you can look back and feel blessed. Why is a gratitude app on here? Because healthy isn't just physical.
3. Calendar and Reminders
So this is all well and good but you have to actually put in the action if you want to get results. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance as they say. So start getting organised. Schedule workouts in, plan when you need to go to the shops, look at when you need to rest. If it needs to ping you to remind you, set that up. A healthy lifestyle is working your new habits into your existing life. It has to fit around family, work, and other hobbies. Using a calendar helps.
What would this list be without YouTube?! Not only is it great for cat videos, endless documentaries and keeping you up late at night, it's also a really useful tool for health and fitness. Search for videos on stretches, how to perform certain moves correctly, workout inspiration and motivation, music and playlists and then don't forget to calm things down with yoga videos and guided meditations. There's not much YouTube doesn't have, is there?!
So there you have it. My favourite apps for supporting a healthy lifestyle.
