Holidays are a time to relax, but if you want to keep your fitness levels up and help balance out the usual over-indulgence of the week away then it can also be a great chance to mix up your routine and come home feeling refreshed with a new boost of motivation for training. Of course, you can keep following your usual plan whilst away if it means using the local/hotel gym, going for runs/walks or doing bodyweight routines but if you fancy a change then read on for my ways of having fun and keeping fit whilst away... 1. Explo-Runs/ WalksOne of my favourite ways to see a new area is to look at what's on the map nearby, plan a rough route and then run to the local sights. I just got home from Malta where I ran to the watch tower, Popeye Village (Google it), Selmun's Palace and a derelict watch tower on seperate days. It was really beautiful and so much fun to be somewhere different, knowing that I had no time constraints and only a rough plan of where I was going. *Hint* If your hotel/villa has internet and you use Strava, press Start whilst connected and then you can use the map whilst you're out even if you don't have internet. Handy if you think you may get lost! 2. Play AreasGetting up before it gets hot usually means that these places are child-free which is fab because they make for a great workout! Use monkey bars for pull ups/let-downs and knee raises/side knee raises, use the end of the slide for tricep dips and step ups, get under slanted ladders for rows, face the ladder for push-ups- There are so many ways to use these great bits of kit. Have a play and make it fun. 3. Pool SwimmingSwimming is a brilliant total body workout out as the water resistance works those muscles and gets the heart rate up. You could choose to do standard lengths but that can get mind numbingly boring so instead, do this: - 2 lengths breast stroke - 2 lengths doggy paddle legs, arms outstretched infront - 2 lengths breast stroke arms, legs dragging behind - 2 lengths breast stroke legs (easier on your back with one arm over head so you don't collide with the end of the pool) - 2 lengths breast stroke Rest 30sec-1minute, then repeat as many times as you like/can fit in to your workout time. 4. Snorkelling/ Other Holiday ActivitiesGoes without saying that there are so many fun holiday activities which don't even feel like exercise. Have you tried snorkelling? Stand up paddle boarding? Kayaking? Surfing? Beach volleyball? Pool volleyball? Lots of hotels also put on some pretty fun classes and/or aqua-fit which is bound to get you giggling whilst getting fit, especially if you get friends involved. 5. Sea WalkingIdeal for doing when the day heats up and you need to cool down: Walking is great but walking with the sea at knee-height is even better as it adds more resistance. Stand up straight, engage your core and go for it. Don't forget your sunnies and lotion! 6. Beach Runs/WalksRunning or walking on sand works your muscles (and heart rate) far more than running on a stable base like tarmac as the body has to adjust to the instability. Brownie points for getting up and out early whilst the beach is deserted- Amazing for headspace. Build up gradually if you've not done this before and don't forget to stretch post workout! If you have any other great holiday tips and activities, let me know- I love getting new ideas to try out!
