Standard New Years Resolutions are boring... See how many of these you can tick off this year instead. Missed January? It's never too late to start, so read down and crack on...
- Try a vegetable you've not had before. Fennel? Pak choi? Red kuri squash?!
- Enter a race or competition. Read: Why You Should Bite The Bullet And Enter That Challenge.
- Learn to train in all different weathers. Rain (tick), wind (tick), torrential rain (tick), sunshine...
- Drink 1.5-2l water a day.
- Play around with adding some different spices to your cooking.
- Try to get enough sleep most nights.
- Treat yourself to a deep tissue massage/ sports massage.
- Finally ditch fad diets. Resist the temptation to 'lose 3 stone in 1 week'. You know it's crap anyway.
- Read at least one inspiring sporting/challenge/fitness book.
- Go for one meat free day a week and help save the planet. Be sure to get enough veggie sources of protein though!
- Practice moderation.
- Try a new exercise class.
- Take more fit-pics when training and log your year in photos to look back on.
- Help with organising a local sporting event.
- Raise money for a charity close to your heart through an organised event or setting your own challenge.
- Eat a fruit you've not tried before.
- Buy yourself a workout wardrobe/ outfit that you really flippin' love. You deserve it.
- Explore a route you've never been on before.
- Set yourself a challenge and train to be able to accomplish it. Be amazed at how well you can do when you stick with it. Run 5k without stopping? Get to the top of that killer hill without stopping? Lift that ridiculously heavy weight like the badass you are?
- Work on re-framing unhelpful thoughts towards yourself, your body and exercise.
- Try a new source of protein for you.
- Buy tickets to watch a sporting event. An old favourite is fun, but why not try something else?
- Take part in a local community sporting event. Tug-o-wars on the beach, New Years Sea Dip etc
- Do something that scares you. Lots.
- Give up one bad habit. Replace with something much better.
- Introduce at least 3 friends to leading a healthier lifestyle. They'll thank you for it if you show them how to enjoy it too.
- Go to a vegan restaurant and/or try something you wouldn't usually have.
- Go on a fitness holiday. Or simply commit to being more active on holiday. How to handle holidays: Food and Fitness
- Invest in a decent pair of trainers. Go see an expert- Your feet, knees, hips and back are definitely worth looking after.
- Keep a training diary. Look back regularly to appreciate your progress.
- Ride/run/workout with someone who is better than you. One of the best ways to improve and push yourself.
- Research healthy recipes, get excited, get cooking.
- Work on your weaknesses rather than avoiding them.
- Try a grain you've not had before. Quinoa? Bulgar wheat? Freekeh?
- Find rewards which work for you that won't undo your hard work or leave you feeling pants afterwards.
- Learn to enjoy your workouts (the majority of the time). And if you can't enjoy it at the time, remember you'll enjoy the results.
- Work on your mental stick. Read: 4 Quick And Easy Mind-Hacks For Exercise.
- Get experimental and try cauliflower rice, cauliflower pizza bases, courgetti etc. Wild.
- Download Strava and get a QOM/KOM/CR. Read: Top Apps To Help With Your Healthy Lifestyle.
- Work on staying consistent. Consistenly.
- Try that thing you've always wanted to do but never gotten round to... Zorbing anyone?!
- Find healthier substitutes for your favourite meals, snacks and drinks.
- Go for a night ride/run. Don't forget lights and high-vis.
- Mix up your music. Go for a different genre or go silent to find some head space.
- Go on a sight-seeing run. So much to see, no time to get bored or think too much.
- Learn a new skill/join a new club- Crossfit? Gig rowing? Fitness hooping?
- Mix it up. Usually just run or walk or spend mindless minutes on the crosstrainer at the gym? Why not do some sprint intervals or try for 1 minute fast, 1 minute slow. Good for fitness and for keeping it fresh.
- Complete a YouTube workout just for giggles. My favourite? Mr Motivator Butt Workout in Tobago. Obviously.
- Get a personalised training plan and stick with it. Ask for help if you need it.
- Be kind to yourself. You wouldn't wanna train with someone who keeps tearing you down, so don't do it to yourself. Big yourself up and be your own best friend to see your training (and happiness!) really take off
- Do a little something each day. Even if it's just a quick walk to the shops or a play on the beach with friends. Exercise doesn't have to to mean running, gym or resistance work. Find the fun!
There you have it. What are you going to try first?! Did I miss any that I should put on there? Let me know in the comments section below!
